Progesterone from a reproductive perspective has a particular role to hold onto the foetus if conception has taken place. Progesterone is a powerful anti depressant, diuretic and anti anxiety agent. It is essential if you want to burn fat.
Last week we discussed stress hormones. The relationship between these and the sex hormones is very important as a high percentage of women who address a possible imbalance get very positive changes to their health and well being. Why? Essentially add adrenalin (which we now know makes your body feel threatened in too high amounts) and in turn cortisol spikes, the body fears there is no food left in the world and cues fat storage. If your body thinks it is under threat and there is no food it will not want to conceive and thus shuts down progesterone production. So what we have left is estrogen and cortisol signalling fat storage and the loss of the balancing hormone that burns fat and gets rid of excess fluid. What then happens to the mind and the mood of the female? She gets moody, tired and further stressed about how she is feeling. Physically she may feel puffy, bloated and like clothes are getting tighter daily. Estrogen dominance is the basis of PMT or PMS!! Get the balance right and those symptoms go away. That's right, it's not normal to suffer this.
Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance are:
~Bloating or fluid retention
~Cold hands and feet
~Headaches particularly around that time of the month
~Yellow tinged skin
This dominance can be caused from lower progesterone levels or more commonly excess environmental exposure including the pill, pesticides, plastics, cleaning products, hormone replacement therapy. So I'm not crazy when I talk about getting rid of the chemicals in your home. They are really playing havoc with your hormones and possibly leading to other health issues.
So what can you do about it if you identify with any of the above?
~Talk to me... please I have been through this and can help you.
~Take a 4 - 8 week break from alcohol. If this is impossible decrease alcohol to 2 nights a week and limit to 2 drinks
~Reduce coffee or remove it completely to detox the liver. Swap it for green tea
~Remove sugar from your diet for 4 weeks
~Get some good supportive supplements that will help detox the liver and balance the hormones (ask me and I can help you with this)
This above topic is so close to me and I firmly believe that this is a major reason women struggle to lose weight even when they are doing all the seemingly right things.
I hope you have found this information useful and please let me know if I can help in any way. There are so many things I can do, if it's coming to your house and showing you what can be swapped with another product or diet suggestions or supplements. There are lots of ways to go about tackling this please just reach out.
